American Friends of Israel

About American Friends of Israel

There are many charities in the United States that aim to help Israel. These organizations include: JStreet, AIPAC, Friends of the IDF and many more.

Residents of the United States are encouraged to support charities by the American tax system. Donations to registered charities are tax-deductible. To claim a charitable deduction on their taxes, a US taxpayer requires a tax receipt from the charity.

Unfortunately for charities in Israel, the United States tax system (IRS-Internal Revenue Service) does not recognize tax receipts issued by charities that are not registered in the United States. As a result, most donations to charities in Israel are not tax-deductible. As a result, there is no tax incentive for American donors to support most Israeli charities. The exceptions are Israeli charities that charge a fee (up to 12.5% of the donation) or those with an affiliate in the United States.

American Friends of Israel (AFI) was founded specifically to make it possible for taxpayers in the United States to get tax receipts for their donations to charities in Israel. AFI acts as an intermediary between donors in the United States, the United States tax system and charities in Israel. Imagine AFI as the hub of a wheel between American donors and Israeli charities. For Israeli charities, the AFI is key to any successful fundraising campaign aimed at residents of the United States.

AFI is a member-based organization. Members are charities in Israel. For information about benefits of membership in AFI, please see here.
